State seeks stay on HC verdict declaring illegal 7.5% VAT on English-medium tuition

The State has petitioned the Supreme Court for a stay on the High Court verdict, which declared illegal the 7.5 percent VAT on tuition of English medium schools.

Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Wednesday forwarded the petition to the regular bench of the Appellate Division and set Jan 2 for a hearing.

The High Court on Monday declared the VAT on tuition of English-medium schools illegal, saying the tax cannot be imposed from next school session.

A 4.5 percent VAT had been imposed on the tuition fees of 102 English-medium educational institutions in 2012. The VAT was increased to 7.5 percent in the current year’s budget and was also extended to cover private universities.

The tax on university students was revoked after they launched large-scale protests.

Guardians of English Medium students then began protests to get the tax on tuition fees in the schools waived, and later moved the High Court.
